>> rose: welcome to our program. tonight, stephanie d'alessandro and john elderfield take us on a tour of a new matisse exhibit at the museum of modern art. >> it's a period when matisse really seemed to have very intently stopped the kind of work he was doing before and began searching for something and we can chart him through the evolution of "bathers by a river" in fact and then i think through "the exhibition" trying different modes of painting. bringing together different styles, avant-garde styles of the time, ways of making the surface of works very different and reworked. and we watch him not sure where he's going but excited about the possibility of a new kind of art for himself and we feel that for matisse that was a kind of radical invention. he said about "bathers by a river" and "moroccans" that they were two of the most pivotal works of his career. i think it's important he used the word "pivotal" and not "important." it suggests there was a change that those works brought about in his career and i think that's part of what that radical invention is about. >> i

and released the results today in a 200-page report. stephanie dhue has more. >> reporter: today's report says the problem started with a bad cement job that caused dangerous gases to leak into the well undetected. crew members misread tests and thought the well was under control, and didn't act until it was too late. the blowout preventer, which should have sealed the well, failed. b.p. took responsibility for its decisions on the rig, but also blamed halliburton for the cement job and rig operator transocean, which maintained the blowout preventer. transocean called b.p.'s report a "self-serving attempt to conceal... b.p.'s fatally flawed well design." b.p. says the well design is sound and consistent with other wells in the area. halliburton says it completed the well under b.p.'s specifications. it also says it's confident its contract with b.p. protects it from lawsuits. the 50-person b.p. investigation team found no proof the company cut corners, but they suggested that b.p. look more broadly at what happened. this report won't be the last word. transocean is doing its own investigation.

. and stephanie d'alessandro, gary c. and francis comer curator of modern art at the art institute of chicago. and here is the conversation between the three of us. first of all, thank you and congratulations for what you have done here. this is a remarkable collaboration. the art institute of chicago here and the museum of modern art. how did it come about, john? >> well, it started five years ago when i visited chicago and found that stephanie working with her colleagues at chicago were doing work on their great matisse "bathers by a river." and the picture which had been begun in 1907, l/1909 and completed in 1917, the aim was to find out how that picture has developed over the years. and really it was an outcome of that that we moved to examination of other paintings by matisse done in the latter part of that period. and really from that the idea came of doing an exhibition. it wasn't first and foremost an exhibition project, it was kind of an investigation project. >> rose: why do you call it "radical invention"? >> well, i think that "bathers by a river" is a good example of this period

channel's stephanie abrams live on north carolina's outer banks. now we have got this latest information about how strong this storm is and it's just been downgraded, right? >> category 4, one of the strongest storms we have seen ever, moving up the coastline, now it has weakened thankfully and we got a long ways to go. winds are now at 125 miles an hour. so at least we're slowly heading in the right direction. you can look at the radar, it's starting to fill in where stephanie's located. the real heavy bands of rain are going to wait until about 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and as we go p the coastline, the tropical storm force winds are now just off of cape carter, that's the southern most point there just to the south of the cape. and there's also the wilmington area. the hurricane force winds are near the center of the storm. but they do extend, big waves for many miles. the eye of the storm is disappearing on us. we could be undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle and that may not have time to fully wind back up. now the waves are probably the biggest story with this storm. the beach erosion i
